Does Small Business Need It Management
Does Small Business Need It Management?
Large and medium enterprise managers are familiar with the term “IT Management” or “IT Service Management”. They know that there is a division within the organization that deals with that - the IT division. IT division takes care of all the company’s IT resources, protects from internal and external threats and automates business processes.
But what about a small company with only tens of computers? Naturally, in this scenario “IT management” is a much more down-to-earth thing. It only has the most important elements: data protection, software support for used applications and installing new compatible hardware.
The most important thing in small business “IT Management” is data protection. Actually, data is one of the company’s most important assets (the other two being people and physical assets). So what does it take to protect a small company’s data? Randomly copying of some files to a CD-R recordable disc from “C: program files - accounting” will not do the trick. A regular data backup plan needs to be created and executed (executed regularly is the most important thing).
The managers must answer these questions: What data is most important to the business? How much can we wait until data is restored? How much hours (days) worth of changes can we loose and cope with? What is more expensive - loosing certain amount of data or protecting the same amount of data? After having answered these questions, it will be easy to employ a backup and disaster recovery strategy: picking, buying and installing the actual equipment.
