The Precision 490 is a high performance workstation that handles the most challenging two- and three-dimensional visual packages such as CAD (computer-aided design) and digital animation. It does this partly by using exceptional graphics technology, known as OpenGL.
But to work effectively, OpenGL requires powerful processors. The Precision 490 therefore has up to two Dual- or Quad-Core Intel® Xeon® series 64-bit processors. These enable the computer to divide tasks between separate cores and share the burden of a complex series of jobs. In this way, the Precision 490 manages to achieve more than with a standard processor and in a relatively short space of time.
Memory
The processors are complemented by the RAM (Random Access Memory). The Precision 490 takes advantage of the latest developments in this field to provide up to an astonishing 32GB.
This level of memory means that the number of programmes you can have working simultaneously, the amount of data that is available and the speed of the programmes all increase substantially.
Storage
More programmes, especially elaborate ones, require greater storage. Dell can install up to three hard drives in the Precision 490 with a total data storage capacity of 1.5TB (1.5 trillion bytes). This is a huge amount of space for a stand-alone PC but some applications require it.
Expansion
The combined strength of the processors, memory and hard drives of the Precision 490 make it an ideal choice in any environment that expects rapid expansion. Even if you begin by using a version with less capability, Dell can provide the hardware to meet your changing needs.
ISV
The Precision 490’s hardware, of course, must match the functions of the software that is run. If it doesn’t, there can be problems. To address this, Dell has a number of ISV (Independent Software Vendors) certifications. These confirm that the Precision 490 is fully compatible with a range of design, engineering, financial and digital content creation software.
